The FA has decided to stop lighting the Wembley arch for political and social issues.
A new policy has been approved by the FA board whereby the arch will only be illuminated for sport and entertainment.
The move follows criticism after the FA did not light the arch after the attacks on Israel by Hamas last month, having done so previously for a variety of causes and incidents.
The arch was lit up after the invasion of Ukraine last year, in rainbow colours in support for LGBTQ+ rights during the World Cup in Qatar, in red after terror attacks in Turkey in 2016 and in the colours of the French tricolore after the Paris terror attacks the year before.
Wembley’s arch will still be lit up for contractual reasons on limited occasions for its official sponsor EE.
The FA also has an agreement with its official charity sponsor Alzheimer’s Society, for example.
The FA will still light up the arch for occasions such as the death last month of Sir Bobby Charlton. The arch was lit in purple following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
