Welsh health board says emergency departments are under 'extreme pressure'

A Welsh health board has announced that its emergency departments are under extreme pressure - as the NHS faces high winter demand, backlog of cases and staff absence with continued Covid disruption.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board confirmed on Tuesday that three of its Emergency Departments were under "extreme pressure" and were "exceptionally busy". This comes after the health board went to the highest alert level - known as a black alert in February.

The health organisation declared a "business continuity incident", which was the highest escalation level available. The alert lasted for 48 hours from 1pm on Monday until lunchtime on Wednesday, February 23. Cwm Taf's major hospitals include the Royal Glamorgan in Llantrisant, Prince Charles in Merthyr and Princess of Wales in Bridgend.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, April 5, afternoon the health board said: "Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has confirmed that three of its Emergency Departments are under extreme pressure and are exceptionally busy at the moment. We are asking the public to only attend if absolutely necessary in a serious or life-threatening emergency."
