The Welsh Government has pledged £300,000 in financial support to the victims of devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey and north-west Syria which have destroyed lives and collapsed entire buildings. The money will go towards urgent aid to help victims of the disaster to survive and keep safe.
Firefighters from Wales have been part of the team helping rescue survivors, and the Welsh Government's donation comes as part of its International Strategy to help Wales be a "globally responsible nation." The first 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the area happened on Monday and tens of thousands of people have been killed.
The Welsh Government reports that around 16,000 people have lost their lives since the first earthquake on Monday, and Sky News reports that this total has now passed 20,000. The Turkish government says a further 380,000 have sought refuge in government shelters and hotels.
