Welsh footballer collapses as heart stops and match abandoned

Wales youth international Pablo Martinez "died for a few seconds" on a football pitch after collapsing during a game.

Chippenham Town defender Martinez, 21, became ill 27 minutes into the National League South game against Chelmsford City on Saturday and was initially non-responsive, but was resuscitated and is thankfully expected to make a full recovery.

"He was given CPR and was also shocked with a defibrillator. Luckily, he came back straightaway," Chippenham's chairman Neil Blackmore said. "Whilst we don't know exactly what's gone on, and he's got lots more tests to have, for a few seconds he did die on the pitch."

Fans on social media praised his club physio's prompt action after watching the distressing incident at Hardenhuish Park, while semi-pro side Chippenham said soon afterwards: "We can confirm that @pablojm78 has been stabilised and is breathing. Everyone at the club would like to wish Pablo in his recovery."

The Oxford-born centre-back represented Wales at U17s and U19s levels, and joined his new team from Bristol Rovers this summer.

At the time of the incident, Chippenham posted: "The players are heading back into the tunnel, as Pablo Martinez collapses in the centre circle, personnel are out immediately."

Within minutes the goalless match was abandoned, and Martinez was taken to hospital in Bristol by ambulance.

Among the messages of support was one from West Brom, where Martinez was an academy player from 2017-20. The Baggies posted: "Wishing you a full and speedy recovery, Pablo."

Club chairman Blackmore told BBC Wiltshire the incident highlighted the importance of ensuring defibrillators, a device which gives a high-energy electric shock to the heart, are available in case of an emergency.

He said: "If it had to happen, I'm just glad it happened here - with all our medical staff there and people to attend to him and bring him back around. I would say to anybody - and not just sports clubs - that if you don't have a defibrillator or have access to one, please get one. Do some fundraising, get a sponsor, but get one. It sits in the cupboard apart from when it's being serviced, so you don't think about it. But the day you need it, my goodness is it worth the money."

Chippenham's game at home to Martinez's former club Oxford City on Tuesday has been postponed because of events at the weekend.
