The Seattle Seahawks started the 2023 regular season campaign where the 2022 one ended: at home against the Los Angeles Rams. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, the end result was not as favorable as last year’s 19-16 overtime victory.
The Rams claimed revenge in Week 1, as they left Lumen Field with a 30-13 blowout win to start the year 1-0. The game started off strong for the Seahawks, who cruised to 13 first half points, scoring on their first three possessions.
Buy Seahawks TicketsThen the second half hit. Thanks to injuries to Charles Cross and Abe Lucas, both of whom had to leave the game, the Seahawks offense stalled. Instead of scoring seemingly at will, Seattle failed to pick up even one first down that wasn’t aided by penalty. They never came close to midfield, let alone anywhere near the end zone.
Los Angeles reminded the 12th Man why they are the Seahawks’ kryptonite under head coach Sean McVay. After struggling in the first half, they completely dominated Seattle in the second in every phase of the game. The script was flipped, as it was Los Angeles who scored on all five of their possessions and outscored the Seahawks 23-0. Quarterback Matthew Stafford improved to 3-0 against Seattle. as a member of the Rams.
Overall, it was a disappointing start to a season filled with incredible promise. By no means is this loss a backbreaker. There’s still plenty of time to clean things up. But the Seahawks are shockingly starting behind the eight ball and staring at a Week 2 showdown against the Lions in Detroit, who are fresh off an upset win over the Chiefs to start the season.
The Rams might be closer to a full blown rebuild than they’d like to admit, but this is the NFL, and any team can win on any given Sunday. A painful lesson for Seattle to re-learn this early in the season.
