Wedding plans at risk as maid of honour is stranded in passport delay crisis

A maid of honour who waited 13 weeks to get a new passport fears the wedding will be cancelled if she can’t travel.

Danielle Williams-Smith, from Morecambe, had been queueing for a passport appointment outside the office on Old Hall Street in Liverpool city centre since it opened at 9am when we spoke to her on Thursday. The passport office has seen an unprecedented surge in applications as five million delayed applying for a new passport during the pandemic.

Danielle said: “It’s just horrendous. The whole process has been so awful. The government hasn’t been prepared to deal with the problem.”
