The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across several parts of India on September 28, with isolated heavy rainfall likely in parts of north India, the Northeast and southern states. The weather outlook comes as the southwest monsoon continues its withdrawal from parts of the country.
Weather forecast September 28: Heavy rain likely in these states
According to the IMD forecast, Uttarakhand is likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall on September 28, while rain and thunderstorms are also expected over parts of Himachal Pradesh and other areas of northwest India. The weather system over Uttar Pradesh is expected to move north-northwestwards and gradually weaken, although rainfall activity may continue in the region.
The IMD has also forecast isolated to scattered rainfall over West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, with thunderstorm and lightning activity possible over parts of Madhya Pradesh. Chhattisgarh may also see isolated rainfall and thunderstorms.
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand weather update
The weather remained particularly active across northern India on September 27. IMD recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall of 30 cm or more over East Uttar Pradesh, while very heavy rainfall of 12-20 cm was recorded over Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
For September 28, the weather system responsible for the rain is expected to move north-northwestwards across Uttar Pradesh and weaken gradually. Uttarakhand is likely to see isolated heavy rain, while rainfall and thunderstorms may continue across parts of the region.
Northeast India weather: Rain, lightning and gusty winds
Several northeastern states are also likely to experience unsettled weather on September 28. The IMD has forecast isolated to scattered rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, while Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura may also receive rain.
Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are likely over Assam and Meghalaya during September 28-30. Similar conditions are forecast over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during September 28 to October 1.
Maharashtra, Gujarat weather forecast September 28
In western India, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra are likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall through the coming days. Marathwada may also see rainfall on September 28.
The IMD has forecast gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph, over Madhya Maharashtra on September 28. Similar winds are likely over Marathwada, while thunderstorm and lightning activity is expected over parts of the western region during the following days.
South India weather: Rain and thunderstorms likely
Parts of south India are also expected to see rainfall on September 28. The IMD has forecast isolated to scattered rain over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Lakshadweep, North Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, as well as parts of Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Telangana. Heavy rainfall is also likely over South Interior Karnataka from September 28 to October 1.
Kerala, Karnataka weather forecast
Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall through September 30, with rainfall activity expected to increase from October 1. Coastal Karnataka may also see more widespread rainfall from September 29 onwards.
The IMD has forecast gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph, over Kerala and Mahe from September 29 to October 1, while North and South Interior Karnataka may also experience gusty winds during this period.
Southwest monsoon withdrawal: Latest update
The southwest monsoon continues to withdraw from parts of India. The IMD said the line of withdrawal on September 27 passed through Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Dholpur, Udaipur, Deesa and Naliya before extending towards the Arabian Sea.
Meanwhile, a well-marked low-pressure area over northern parts of central Uttar Pradesh is expected to move north-northwestwards and weaken gradually during the next 12 hours. Another low-pressure area has formed over south coastal Myanmar and is expected to move towards the north Andaman Sea before progressing towards the northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh.
Fishermen warning: Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal
The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid certain sea areas during the period. In the Arabian Sea, warnings are in place along and off the Somalia coast and over some parts of the southwest Arabian Sea through September 29.
In the Bay of Bengal, rough weather conditions are expected over the north Andaman Sea and along parts of the Myanmar and Bangladesh coasts. Fishermen have been advised to follow the latest IMD warnings before venturing into the affected areas.
