Weather maps show snow headed for Newcastle as Met Office warns of incoming frost and ice

After a warm start to winter, with mild temperatures and very little snow, it looks like things will be cooling off in the coming weeks. Weather maps show that snow is heading our way next week with the Met Office warning of frost and ice over the weekend.

Despite a prediction of a second Beast from the East and worries over a storm dubbed the Troll from Trondheim, the actual winter storms have failed to materialise. However, temperatures towards the beginning of next week will be noticeably colder.

The BBC Weather Service is predicting temperatures of around 3C with wintry showers very likely. While weather maps from WXCharts are forecasting that Newcastle and the wider north east region can expect as much as 3cm an hour.

This weekend will get off to a wet start with frequent showers, persistent rain and strong winds moving northwards. Temperatures will start off as rather mild but turn even colder towards Sunday afternoon and the early hours of Monday morning.

Maps show that this rainy weather over the weekend will make way for wintry showers and snow. It is predicted that it will fall over high ground in Scotland before landing in our region on Monday.

The charts, from international weather service WXCharts, predict that up to 3cm of snow may fall over Monday afternoon, lasting well into the evening. Further into the week, colder conditions are expected to continue with overnight frost, wintry showers and ice.

The Met Office also forecasts snow, stating unsettled weather is expected across most of the UK over the first half of January, with the majority of the nation seeing blustery showers and rain.
