We watched Outlander episode three - here is what we thought

Fergus' worries reach boiling point, the friction between Claire Fraser and Tom Christie continues and of course, we got to see Jamie back in a kilt – Outlander episode three had it all.

A bit of a slow burner this one, especially after the frenetic energy of the first two episodes, the third episode, named 'Temperance', kicked off with our Roger once again stepping up and being something of a hero.

The reluctant would-be minister is still finding his feet on the Ridge, but between his amateur heroics, being a Man of God, and helping a bereaved widow, this episode showed that he is beginning to rise to the challenges of this new timeline.

We are sure that fellow Roger (and Scots actor Richard Rankin) fans will be delighted to see him get some screen time.

Meanwhile, Tom Christie continues to be an ominous presence and his constant butting heads with Claire and Jamie has provided some of the most interesting moments of the season so far, particularly his reluctance to try any of Claire's potions (see ether) in preparation for an invasive operation that was sure to be incredibly painful.

The sight of Tom grimacing in pain as Jamie happily reads a prayer along with him was strangely funny in what must have been a torturous moment for the religious stalwart.

The later quieter moments between Claire and Tom served as a delightful juxtaposition to their usual barbs and though the pair continued to rub up against one another, it's clear that something of a friendship is forming between them.

Not to be outdone, Tom's children are proving to be intriguing characters in their own right and Malva (Jessica Reynolds) is given her own chance to shine and bounce off main characters such as Young Ian and Jamie.

The true stars of this episode though, and in honesty, the entire start of this season, have been Fergus and Marsali.

The French man has battled many demons over this season and it seems Marsali has had enough.

Driven to breaking point, it leads to a truly touching moment between him and his adoptive father, Jamie that, while less powerful than the book version, was still able to land a gut punch that has seen fans flock to social media to praise star Cesar Domboy and on-screen wife Lauren Lyle for their incredible acting.

And finally, the war looks to have arrived as Major MacDonald reveals that the Boston Tea Party has taken place and that the King could view it as an act of "outright aggression".

Looks like Claire is right, the storm has arrived, but will the Ridge survive? I guess we'll be tuning in again on Sunday night to find out.
