This year's annual Summer Game Fest was officially kicked off by Sony on Tuesday afternoon, with the PlayStation maker hosting a new State of Play event that gave players a closer look at several new and upcoming titles headed to PS5 and other platforms. Games like Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Onimusha: Way of the Sword left a big impact on many, with Marvel's Wolverine ultimately stealing the show.
And yet, much of the community's focus on the presentation had nothing to do with its contents, and was instead directed to the chat of the livestream — a result of players barraging it with a clear, unified message: "We want Destiny 3," either fully written out, in hashtag form, or conveyed with emotes. The spam continued for nearly the entire show.
For those who've been keeping up with the news surrounding Bungie's live-service space fantasy FPS series, I doubt the rallying cry will come as a surprise; since the studio announced Destiny 2 development is ending on June 9 when its final Monument of Triumph update comes out, players have passionately pushed for Sony to greenlight a sequel, surging a Change.org petition that now has nearly 350,000 signatures.
Fans were further spurred on by a comment from Destiny 2 community lead and principal communications manager Dylan "dmg04" Gafner, who wrote that "Guardians make their own fate" in a post on Sunday. He then reposted a call for Destiny 2 players to log in on June 9 and flood its servers for its final update, giving many hope that doing so might sway Sony to invest in future Destiny projects.

I'd also like to draw attention to the fact players have been driven to get loud by recent revelations about what's been going on at Bungie behind the scenes. Former Destiny developers have publicly claimed that "greed" from leadership led to a shortage of resources for the live-service shooter, with new comments aligning with what's been said about the studio's management after the devastating 2024 layoffs at the developer.
Reportedly, that lack of adequate support played a large role in Destiny 2's steady decline and imminent downfall — and fans feel strongly that the franchise deserves far more than such an abrupt and dissatisfying conclusion. After all, Destiny has been around since 2014 and has touched the lives of millions, and has left a monumental mark on gaming history.
As a veteran of Destiny 2 that played it frequently during its nine-year lifespan, I'm in full agreement with that sentiment, and have high hopes that the ongoing rally to demand a future for the series will bear fruit. I don't expect we'll hear anything about a potential Destiny 3 soon, but eventually, I'd be really happy to see it announced by Sony and Bungie.
My main concern is that Bungie as we know it may be a completely different entity by then; with Sony forced to endure a massive $565 million impairment loss attached to the developer and Marathon not exactly raking in massive success, one can't help but wonder if the publisher will put the studio through some significant restructuring. In the end, though, only time will tell what Bungie's future holds.
