We tried the Too Good To Go bags and saved £15 - but the deal may be better for families

The Too Good To Go app can be a great way to save money on your shopping, which is now more important than ever given the cost of living crisis. It allows you to collect a bag or box of discounted food products.

These products are close to sell-by and use-by dates with the purpose of reducing food waste. Various businesses are signed up to the app including supermarkets, shops, cafes and other retailers.

I thought I would check the app out for myself to see if it is worth the hype. But sadly, I was left disappointed by the contents of two surprise bags from Starbucks and Tubbees Dessert Lab.

Don't get me wrong - I saved £15, which was great but I was hoping for more variety in the bags.

I first headed to Starbucks, inside the Silverburn shopping centre, where I paid £3.59 for items worth £10.75.

The Too Good To Go app said: "Rescue a selection of delicious wraps, bagels, paninis, salads, sweet treats, yogurts, juices, healthy snacks and your favourite pastry items.

"Remember, the contents of your surprise bag depend on which items haven't sold that day, so it's a surprise until you pick it up. All items will be nearing their best before or use by date."

In this bag, I was treated with a chicken, mozzarella and pesto focaccia; a plant based breakfast wrap, spinach and pea falafel wrap and a red Leicester cheese and pickle sandwich.

Grabbing these delicious sandwiches for just under four quid was great but I thought there would be a mix of sandwiches and sweet treats as per the advert on the app.

The app also doesn't allow customers to choose bags for different dietary requirements, so I wasn't able to eat the chicken sandwich - and it was thrown away.

Another downfall is that all the products expire on the same day. This is great if you have a big family to feed but if, like me, its just you and your other half, there's no way those sandwiches would be eaten before the expiry date ends.

In search of a sweet treat, I also spotted a surprise bag at Tubbees Dessert Lab, on Paisley Road West, and instantly added it to my basket, paying £3.99 for items apparently worth £12.

The add on the app reads: "A surprise bag that could include fresh, indulgent dessert-time treats and/or imported goods such as crisps and other snacks."

I had high hopes for this one but they soon came crashing down when I opened my bag to see what was inside.

Instead of the cookies and cakes I was expecting, I got three cans of sparkling water, four packets of Trident chewing gum and a slice of carrot cake.

I wondered whether the bag was actually worth £12 and walked out the store feeling glum with my craving for a sweet treat not satisfied.

Overall, the original value of both bags was around £23 which I paid around £8 - an undeniable bargain and I do believe the Too Good To Go app is excellent for bigger families to save cash and stop food waste - I just got unlucky with the variety in my bags.
