We tried the 'controversial' pricey scones in a plush Irish hotel to see if they're worth the hefty price

The whole of Ireland has heard about ‘Sconegate’ - the "outrageous" price of coffee and scones at a newly-opened hotel in Tipperary - but not many have actually tasted the scones.

One woman got the shock of her life when she took her mother to the five-star Cashel Palace Hotel on Mother’s Day, without knowing the price, and ended up paying nearly €50 for coffee and scones for three people.

A breakdown of the receipt reveals that the hotel charges €15 a head (€5 for coffee and €10 for three mini scones with clotted cream and jam) and a 10% gratuity fee included, leaving some wondering if these were the most expensive scones in the country.
