'We tried out this Dublin pizza place's new recipe as it reopens for the first time this year'

Southpaw Pizza in Temple Bar was well-known for selling its unique folded style pizza.

They closed just before Christmas, so they could change recipes and offer a different style of pizza instead. And even though it may seem changing style of pizza isn't that complicated, there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.

When the shop was selling the fold over pizza, the dough was a Naples inspired recipe, and now it is a Rome inspired one - which according to pizza expert Dave are 'completely different'. It is a bit more crunchy, not as filling, and similar to focaccia.

On offer in Southpaw, there is a jambon inspired pizza slice with their own homemade cheese sauce made from Irish red cheddar, a spicy salami slice, goats cheese and roasted butternut-squash slice, a slice with slow roasted pork belly, a cheese pizza slice, a miso mushroom slice (which are both vegan friendly), as well classic pepperoni and mozzarella slices.

We had to try the jambon inspired pizza slice, which I can confirm was delicious, and did really taste like a jambon! All of the dough is made every morning in a special temperature controlled room, as well as many of the other ingredients used in the pizza.

Speaking about the closure and reopening, Dave told Dublin Live: "It never really felt right and the sales reflected that. Temple Bar is a tourist area and I found a lot of people didn't know what folded pizza was, and therefore wouldn't come in.

"Even though we have only be reopened for a week, I can already tell that people are more likely to buy familiar looking pizza slices." Dave explained that the dough that was needed for the folded pizza was very different to the dough they need now, so it was necessary to close down for about six weeks to remove the old equipment and install the new ones.

He added: "I'm happy with how everything turned out and hopefully it will be worth it."

They also have traditional Italian cannoli desserts on offer. They are currently only opened from from Wednesday to Sunday and offer a student discount every day, which includes 2 slices of pizza, and a can of coke for a tenner.
