After a positive reception from what felt like the rest of Edinburgh, we had to head over to the latest addition to the Princes Mall food court - Homies Pizza.
Promising an ‘authentic slice of Detroit’, the new spot comes from the team behind Butta Burger. Specialising in pillowy square-pan pizzas with loaded toppings, Homies offers up a decadent twist on traditional deep-dish pizza.
When we discovered more about the new outlet, it was only right that we got the full experience. On reflection, we’ve got some key points of interest that should be considered before your visit.

Firstly, make sure you're hungry. Yes, the pizza is incredible - but when co-creator Graham Atkison said the new venture aims for ‘indulgence’, he wasn’t joking.
The sizable slice is layered with toppings, and isn’t for the faint of heart. When we were making our choice, which is easily done through their self-service stations, it was filling just looking at the menu.
The initial options are; Detroit Pies, Vegan Pies, Wings & Dips, Drinks and Cookies. We went for the flagship dish, with seven different versions of the Detroit Pie available.
The choices are Homies Detroit Classic (pepperoni, jalapenos, hot honey), Margherita, Philly Cheesesteak, Firebird (salsa, salt and pepper chicken, red onions), Double Pepperoni, Mushtang Sally (ham and mushrooms) or Pesto Chicken Crunch (buttermilk fried chicken, pesto mayo).
We went for the Detroit Classic, of course. Here comes the second piece of advice - make sure you’re not in a rush.
If you’re thinking of picking up a quick slice on your way to a train, think again. Yes, Homies does sit amongst a selection of fast food restaurants, but speed is not a key feature.
Our next tip - when it does arrive at your table (if you’re sitting in, they’ll bring the food to you) give it a minute before you tuck in. The pizza will arrive red-hot, so unless you’d like to have your entire mouth scalded off, do try and be patient.
It was totally worth the wait, and if you do have a spare ten minutes to wait we highly recommend it. What we do not recommend is wearing white.
Our fourth slice of advice would be either bring a bib, wear dark colours, or use a knife and fork. To sum up, this pizza is messy and you will get food all over yourself - take it from us, who chose to wear a light shirt and spent the rest of the day covered in spicy honey sauce.
If you’re planning a quick lunch time snack before returning to the office, consider this - you will spend the rest of the day in a food coma, covered in sauce and weighed down by cheese and dough. Perhaps this is a spot better suited for a quick stop on the way home or when you have a dark room to lie down in after.
