On a weekend morning is there anything better than a bacon sandwich?
Hungover or not, and with red sauce or brown, starting the day doesn't get much better than with a bacon butty and a cup of tea. But have you noticed that bacon can vary quite a lot depending on where you buy it from?
Sometimes it looks good in the packet, but then seeps out loads of water while frying and shrivels up into next to nothing. Other types of bacon stay nice and thick and you only need a couple of rashers to fill your sandwich.

With that in mind, we set out this week to find our favourite supermarket bacon. We tried bacon from stores including Sainsbury's, Asda and Iceland to see which impressed us the most. Here's our verdict:
Sainsbury's Smoked Bacon Medallions, Be Good To Yourself
A bacon sandwich is a great start to the day, or quick lunch for that matter, but it doesn't always feel like the healthiest option, so I decided to try the 'Be Good To Yourself' packet from Sainsbury's to see how it compared on flavour. You get eight medallions in the 200g pack for £2.45 and the rashers are trimmed so they don't have any rind.
I quite like this as I always end up chopping the fat off anyway because I don't like eating it unless it's really crisp. I chose the 'smoked' packet for added flavour and the rashers cooked quickly, but needed a little oil in the pan first due to not having the fat from the rind.
They were ready in less than five minutes and kept their shape, not shrivelling up, and didn't look overly dry like I thought they might. Taste-wise I was really impressed. They retained a thick texture and I could definitely taste the smoky flavour.
Once they were in a sandwich with red sauce, I don't think I would have been able to tell that they were a 'healthy' option had I not known already. I was really impressed with these and will be buying them again.

Iceland’s 10 Rashers Unsmoked Back Bacon
There’s not much better than a good bacon butty to start your day, I swear. However, there’s definitely a few things that can make or break your bacon experience.
This week I managed to grab two packs of Iceland’s 10 Rashers Unsmoked Back Bacon for £3.50, which I thought was an absolute steal. I found the product had quite a bit of fat on, but a quick chop sorted that out and I was still found out with large rashers.
The bacon cooked quickly with a dash of oil in the pan, leaving it until it was nice and crispy - is there any other way? I was very impressed by the taste and how well the bacon kept its shape.
The rashers were thick and full of flavour so when I added some toast and brown sauce it was pretty much perfect. I was really impressed with Iceland’s unsmoked back bacon and I’ll definitely be buying it again.

Asda's 6 Thick Cut Unsmoked Back Bacon
I absolutely love a bacon sandwich, especially with an egg on top! I'm not usually too fussy about bacon, but if it's fatty, it's a big no from me.
Usually I go for a smoked bacon rasher, but I decided to go for the unsmoked considering it was cheaper, and I wasn't disappointed. Priced at £1.60, the pack of bacon had 6 reasonably thick rashers absolutely bursting with flavour.
I cooked the bacon to make sure it was nice and crispy and added it to some generously buttered bread with an egg on top and I was seriously impressed. The rashers did have a slight bit of fat on them but it didn't ruin the experience for me, I absolutely loved it.
I'll definitely be buying these bacon rashers again, considering they were the cheapest out of the lot, they were perfect for a bacon butty.
