We took a fiver to massive independent Carlton supermarket in search of bargains

Everyone loves a good bargain, don’t they? With a fiver, we wanted to know just how much you can get when shopping at the Falcon Indian and World Foods Supermarket in Carlton as community reporter, Keimae Blake, reports.

With a huge jump in inflation over the last few months, many people have found themselves shopping around to save an extra bit of cash. There’s nothing like having a good browse around a supermarket and when leaving with spending less than you intended to, it’s smiles all round.

Based at 135 Carlton Road, Falcon Indian and World Foods Supermarket is situated next door to Lidl and it opened in 2019. I wanted to know if the Falcon store had bargains galore or if it's similar to other supermarkets. Having never been to the store before, I was taken aback at how big it is inside.

With rows and rows of seasonings, spices, freezer foods, beauty products, tinned foods and so much more, I was optimistic about being able to find some jaw-dropping bargains. With only me and a few other customers, I could browse in leisure whilst spotting bargains, such as five lemons for £1, nine packs of toilet roll for £1.95 and 200g of rice for 85p.

Kitchenware items are also available to buy, such as pots, frying pans and other storage items. This spacious store in Carlton is perfect for global food brands such as the Caribbean company, Grace.

At the checkout, there were no horrific surprises at the till. I spent £4.13 on bread, six hot dog sausages, crisps and a packet of chicken flavoured soup mix. For four items, I thought this was a reasonable price.

My bread cost £1.19, £0.49 for the soup mix, £0.80 for hot dog sausages and a multipack of crisps for £.1.65. However, the advice to shop around still stands as in Tesco, you can get eight Ye Olde Oak sausages for £0.59, currently in ASDA you can get a loaf of their own brand bread for £0.70 and a multipack of Walkers crisps in Sainsburys for £1.35.
