‘We should have seen this coming’: Why a Royal Navy ship took so long to set sail for Cyprus after Iran strike

A British warship deployed to Cyprus as part of the UK’s response to the war in Iran has finally set sail, seven days after its mission was first announced.

HMS Dragon was sent to the Mediterranean after a drone struck a Royal Air Force base in Cyprus on the night of 1st March. In a recorded TV address earlier that evening, Sir Keir Starmer said he had agreed to a US request to use British military bases for “defensive” strikes on Iranian missile sites, adding “British lives” had been put at risk. The next day, he said would scramble the ship to the eastern Mediterranean.
