Today we bring you news of plans to bring Britain to a standstill – a mass protest in Westminster followed by regional actions.
It will be chaos.
The group Just Stop Oil wants to force the Government to stop licensing new oil production.
At the moment, it is unclear what the action will involve.
But some elements have been recruited from groups like Extinction Rebellion, Animal Rebellion and Insulate Britain.
And they have a track record of direct action, including sit-down protests that halt traffic.
Disruption is inevitable. It’s going to come at a bad time.
October will see us grappling with the cost of living crisis, energy bill hikes, inflation.
Who knows if the rail strikes will be resolved?
By then teachers could be striking, nurses – everyone.
The last thing we need is a mass movement designed to make things even harder.
Public sympathy – which will already be at breaking point – could snap.
But we have to understand, this is desperation.
Many of these protesters have campaigned for years about the damage we are doing to the planet.
They warned about the climate crisis but no one listened.
Their warnings are coming true.
Successive governments should have listened.
They should have done the hard work, taken the tough decisions and committed to a green agenda.
It’s not too late.
The Tories could commit to a reasonable net zero target.
It could show they are serious about climate change.
Act now and avoid the October protests.
Act now... and save the planet.
Grim news for Tony
It felt, said Paula Hudgell, like being punched in the stomach. The news that the pair who inflicted such damage on her boy were being freed from jail.
Paula adopted Tony after he was beaten so badly as a baby he lost his legs. Now, these monsters are to be freed. Tony knows this and told his mum: “I have to join the police so I can re-arrest them.”
The bravery of this little boy is just incredible. But he shouldn’t need to be joining the police to sort this out. The justice system should have done it for him.
