The cost of living crisis has seen many of us cut down where possible to avoid hefty bills at the end of the month.
And whilst energy is at the top of our list for many, followed by the likes of petrol prices, food shopping is also another essential that is on the rise.
We have been looking at some supermarkets to see just how much shopping costs looking at items such as bread, milk, squash and rice from Tesco. To compare prices, we also took a look at Morrisons.

So what is the price difference between their similar products? Here is what we found...
Tesco - essentials total
Breaking down the 10 essential items we found yesterday (January 30) in Tesco, the supermarket total came to £10.17. This allowed us to buy essentials such as a drink, milk for cereal or adding to dishes and other drinks, as well as food cupboard staples for making dinner and lunches with bread, ham and cheese for sandwiches.

- Milk: 95p
- Cereal: 63p
- Ham: 86p
- Cheese: £2.20

- Rice: 35p

- Squash: 45p
Morrisons essentials
Looking at Morrisons for the same products, as cheap as we could find them at the time of writing, this is what we came across.
Bread
When it comes to bread there is a 30p price difference with Morrisons/' Medium White Bread (400g) being the most expensive.
Milk
Next up, milk. Morrisons and Tesco have priced their milk the same for the same amount, one pint.
Cereal
Morrisons Cornflakes (500g) comes in at 99p compared to Tesco's 63p cornflakes, also weighing the same amount. This brings the price difference to 36p.
Ham
Tesco's cheapest option for this is Eastman's Cooked Ham weighing 125g. The description says it has nine slices per packet and costs 86p.
This compares to Morrisons Savers Cooked Ham costing £1.19, currently on sale for £1, for 200g. This makes it a price difference of 11p.
Cheese
For cheese, Morrisons and Tesco have a price difference of 29p with Morrisons cheese costing £2.49 and Tesco coming in at £2,20.
Chicken
For two chicken breasts, Tesco are selling it for £2.50 whilst Morrisons are selling theirs for £2.59 making it just 9p more expensive.
Rice
When it comes to rice, Morrison's Saver Golden Vegetable Rice weighing 120g costs 28p. This compares to Tesco's rice, slightly more expensive, at 39p making it a price difference of 11p.
Soup
Morrisons have a selection of tinned soups, with many of them starting at 85p. Tesco, however, are cheaper with their tinned soups starting at 54p making a price difference of 31p.
Eggs
Morrisons pack of six free range eggs costs £1.75. This compares to Tesco's £1.30 making the shops have a price difference of 45p.
Squash
And finally, drinks. Tesco's squash comes in at 45p whist Morrisons cheapest is their Morrisons No Added Sugar Apple & Blackcurrant Squash at 99p making a difference of 54p.

TOTAL: £12.58
Morrisons versus Tesco - essentials price difference
Tesco's total shop came to £10.17 meanwhile Morrisons essentials shop came to £12.58. The price difference between both shops is £2.41.
Whilst not a figure that is staggering, it all adds up. Although there are deals on, people may want to think about Tesco's Clubcard prices versus if you don't have a card.
