We saw an Edinburgh Fringe seancé drag show and it wasn’t what we expected

Between how busy life is, juggling a million things at once it’s easy to forget how enjoyable it is to allow yourself to immerse into the darkness of a theatre and share laughter and pure joy with a room full of strangers.

When we stepped into the venue on Sunday night this is exactly what the show delivered.

The title of the comedy drag show combines a seance with Beyoncé, two things you wouldn’t normally put together but a genius combination and I was instantly sold. As soon as I spotted the poster I knew I had to see this show.

It was my last show of a busy first week seeing Fringe shows so by 10pm on Sunday night I was pretty worn out but we headed along to see Séayoncé - Res-erection showing at 10.00pm from August 3-28 at Assembly Roxy in Southside.

I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect going into this show but I had a feeling I’d enjoy it. As we went into the huge hall at the top of the old church and sat down I was instantly impressed with the stage set up, it was peculiar with a lot of details to take in that made me instantly excited for the show ahead.

The intro to the show was captivating and exciting, we didn’t know exactly what was coming but we knew it was going to be good.

The writing of the show is sensational, filled with witty jokes (I’m not going to lie a few went over my head) but none the less I was laughing out loud throughout while being totally encapsulated in the story of the show.

Roxy upstairs had been transformed into a magical and mysterious room, the spooky hall with that classic old town musty smell made it the perfect venue for the show.

The costumes and make-up were fantastic and the performance flowed really well. I loved the keyboardist playing Leslie, every line they spoke throughout made the the audience erupt in laughter.

But equally the sharp humour and sassy main character presence of Séayoncé was brilliant. Together they were iconic and put on a great show. Despite it being a comedy with loads of daft parts, the story worked really well and I was not expecting the ending at all.

The whole performance was put on between just two performers. The show was snappy, fast and the audience were in stitches throughout.

Despite laughing every five minutes, the show addressed a couple of really important issues which I liked and rounded off the show on a really heartwarming message. It’s always a great feeling when you walk out a brilliant show feeling uplifted with something positive to think about.

The show description reads: “The baddest b!tch in the spirit world is back, the legendary Ghost Whisperer Séayoncé! What better way to feel alive again than with a big throbbing res-erection? Ghouls just want to have fun... it's time you did too!

“A desperate soul haunts the festival and no, not a fringe performer... it's time for a little exorcism. It's bound to be an occult classic!”

It was just a fantastic fringe show, hilarious, well written with skilled performers that all contributed to a thoroughly entertaining performance. If you enjoy, dry humour, sharp story telling and skilled musicians this show is for you.
