It’s no secret that Hollywood has a reputation for being fake, so when true friendships emerge amongst A-listers, we take notice. The latest duo to catch our eye? Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.
The two movie stars have been busy promoting their upcoming film, Deadpool & Wolverine, and delivering us plenty of adorable friendship fodder in the process.
Just last month, they spoke to People, where Jackman gushed that he could tell Reynolds “anything.”
Reynolds returned the compliment, saying, “I think the secret sauce to a long-lasting Hollywood friendship is not too dissimilar to having a partner or a marriage. I am genuinely rooting for you, all the time. I want you to win. It’s the same way I feel about Blake [Lively]. As I’m rooting for her, I know she’s rooting for me, and it’s why we’re so connected.”
“There’s probably fewer friends in our life that you can say anything to, the stuff you’re ashamed, embarrassed, anything,” Jackman replied.
“And ever since I’ve known you, and I would say in particular in like the last five, 10 years, we’ve had more time where we go for our walks because you’re an unbelievable listener,” he continued. “So you can tell me anything and I can tell you anything, and I don’t feel like you’re going to be judging or necessarily giving me the answer: ‘Do this.’ And I think that has been the key.”
Guys, we’re blushing!
Of course, this kind of easy rapport only comes with years of friendship, which got us thinking: how long have Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman been besties? We’re taking a deep dive into their bromance below.
When Did Ryan Reynolds First Meet Hugh Jackman?
In true celebrity fashion, the pair first met in 2008, on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
“I was nervous as hell,” Reynolds told People. “I was walking through the trailers, jet-lagged, disoriented, feeling really green and kind of out of my depth, and there was no script to look at. It was just like, what’s going to happen?”
But it was actually Jackman – at the time already a huge star – who made him feel welcome.
“I heard my name, ‘Ryan!’ in between these trailers as I was walking. And it was you [Jackman]. Just the fact that you knew my name meant so much to me. And you came over, you gave me a big hug and you said, ‘Welcome aboard.’ ”
In the nearly two-decades since, their friendship has gone from strength to strength, with the pair frequently spotted hanging out together. Among their most memorable sightings was attending the Super Bowl in 2024 (alongside Blake Lively and Taylor Swift), and appearing together on Chicken Shop Date (which will air this week). We’ll definitely be tuning in.
