There’s a very specific kind of brain rot that happens when BookTok, Broadway lore, and pop girl heartbreak all collide. And unfortunately for me, and maybe you, we need to talk about that.
Off Campus has been doing the rounds just about everywhere and introducing actor Antonio Cipriano to the masses as the one and only, John Logan.
However, I feel like we’re at risk of losing the ancient texts. And by that, I mean the Reneé Rapp lore that has been looming around the hockey heartthrob for years now.

You see, if you’re meeting Cipriano for the first time as Logan, you’re probably just seeing a hot hockey player with a complicated emotional arc. Which is fine. But before Prime Video, he and Reneé Rapp were part of the same Broadway pipeline, and that context adds a lot.
Back in 2019, Reneé stepped into Mean Girls as Regina George while Antonio Cipriano was performing in Jagged Little Pill. They weren’t just randomly in the same city, they came up through the same system.

Both of them are Jimmy Award winners, which, if you’re not deep in theatre lore, is basically the biggest national awards program for high school musical theatre in the US. It’s known for spotting talent early and feeding directly into Broadway. Past winners and finalists tend to end up in the same circles, working with the same coaches, accompanists and creatives.
So by the time they both landed on Broadway in their late teens, they were already moving within that same tight-knit network.
And they acted like it. They posted duets, performed together, and generally existed as a very visible pair online. Including, most importantly to me, a Hadestown duet that genuinely went platinum in my household. If you know, you know.
Their relationship was never formally confirmed, but it didn’t need to be. For people paying attention, it was obvious enough.
Then they seemingly broke up.
Not long after, Reneé released “In the Kitchen”, which quickly became one of her most defining songs. It’s the kind of track that people latch onto, especially when you already know the timeline. When she sings, “So I’ll dance with your ghost in the living room / And I’ll play the piano alone / But I’m too scared to delete all our videos / ’Cause it’s real once everyone knows,” it lands in a very specific way.
Nothing has been confirmed about who the song is about, but fans connected the dots. The timing, the overlap, the emotional detail, it was enough. Cipriano also appeared as an extra in The Sex Lives of College Girls while Reneé was starring in it, which only added to the sense that their lives were still intersecting at that point.
Now, he’s John Logan in Off Campus — Garrett Graham’s (Belmont Cameli) best friend in The Deal, and the lead of The Mistake, which comes next in the book series. If the show follows that order, his season is on the way.
And knowing all of this does make watching it feel slightly different.
Online, he’s already picked up nicknames like “Mr In The Kitchen” and “Mr I Hate Boston”, which is particularly funny when you remember how central Boston is to the Off Campus world.
Meanwhile, Reneé has gone on to become the lesbian icon that she is and has created bangers after bangers, while continuing to cause mayhem in interviews and junkets, staying true to her un-media trained self.
Also, on a personal note, I did get to speak with Antonio, alongside his co-stars Stephen Kalyn (Dean) and Theo Graham (Tucker). All great, no notes. My only regret is not asking Antonio the one question that now feels obvious: will Logan end up in the kitchen with Tucker next season?
Because Tucker cooks. Reneé Rapp sings In the Kitchen. The opportunity was right there and I missed it. I will be thinking about that for the rest of my lifetime.
So consider this me doing my part to preserve the lore. If you’re watching Off Campus, you may as well have the full picture.
And now I just need Prime Video to do the funniest thing possible and drop In the Kitchen into John Logan’s season. Even briefly. That’s all I’m asking. Do it for the potential edits!!
