'We have to act' - Erik ten Hag makes demand of Manchester United players vs Brighton

Erik ten Hag has urged his Manchester United players to show how good they really are and respond with an emphatic performance against Brighton today.

United were humiliated by Sevilla in their Europa League quarter-final defeat in midweek and must pick themselves up quickly for the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

Ten Hag's side have suffered many heavy defeats so far this season but have often found a way to bounce back, just as they will need to again this afternoon.

Speaking ahead of the game, the United manager has sent a rallying cry to his players and urged them to put things right with their next performance.

''The team showed character on several occasions this season, so we believe they can do it again," he told club media. "We have to do it again because of course we are not happy [about the Sevilla game], we were really disappointed and frustrated with our performance and level as this is not our standard. We want to act.''

It has been a mixed season for United with as many highs as there have been lows, but along the way there have been some truly brilliant performances.

They will likely need another to beat in-form Brighton at Wembley, and Ten Hag has urged his side to handle the occassion before they even think about trying to outclass their opponents.

Asked what was needed, he added: "First of all, bring your own performance. We will make a good plan and from there on, [try and] execute it. Then you have to manage the game and anticipate if the opponent can do different stuff. You have to anticipate these things and deal with the circumstances, make it your game.

"We can play football and we have shown this so many times, we beat all the big teams in the Premier League. We know we can do it but, in the moment, you have to do it.''
