We have a duty to protect our victims

One of the best achievements in the devolved era has been the increased focus on tackling domestic abuse.

Holyrood passed pioneering legislation in this area and probing complaints has been a key priority for Police Scotland.

The shifting mindset is borne out by the stats.

New figures out this week show that the single force responded to 63,093 calls about domestic abuse last year.

A call to the police about domestic abuse is made nearly every nine minutes on average.

We can also reveal today that more than 200 police investigations were launched into the country’s worst abusers last year.

In the last fortnight five of these appalling individuals were jailed for a total of 61 years.

Another encouraging fact is that people are increasingly exercising their rights to find out if their partner has a history of offending.

Last year saw a 12 per cent rise in applications using Clare’s Law – another groundbreaking reform.

But politicians and authorities cannot be complacent about a scourge that continues to blight many lives, particularly those of women.

The fact that so much domestic abuse occurs speaks to deep-seated issues about misogyny in Scotland.

Laws must be robust, police should investigate complaints and offenders should be convicted.

As Detective Chief Superintendent Sam Faulds said: “Preventing domestic abuse is our ultimate aim.”

But education also has a role in fostering respect for women.

We need to be vigilant if Scotland is to turn the corner in addressing this despicable crime.

Pray for The Goalie

Andy Goram was a warrior between the posts for an all-conquering Rangers side.

In a glittering career, he established himself as one of Scotland’s greatest goalkeepers.

But the Ibrox legend now faces his biggest battle after a cancer diagnosis.

Goram has revealed he only has six months to live and spoken frankly about his illness.

Despite his plight, he paid tribute to NHS staff and told of some light-hearted moments with his teammates.

Goram has bravely faced his cancer and aims to live the rest of his life as normally as possible.

His revelations in today’s Record will shock adoring fans who remember him for his Rangers heroics.

But it won’t just be Ibrox faithful who will be sending their thoughts and prayers his way.

The whole of Scottish football will be behind the man simply known as The Goalie.
