'We have a clear idea' - Jurgen Klopp first words after signing new Liverpool contract

Jurgen Klopp has highlighted the "freshness" about Liverpool that has give him new energy as he explained the reason behind signing a new contract.

The Reds boss, who was due to leave in 2024, has put pen to paper on a deal that will extend his Anfield commitment until the summer of 2026.

Should Klopp - who arrived from Borussia Dortmund in October 2015 - see out the remainder of his contract, he will become the club's second-longest serving post-war manager after Bill Shankly. He is due to surpass the nine-year stint of Bob Paisley later this year.

Both of Klopp's assistants, Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, have also agreed to stay at the club for the next four years, with the Reds boss admitting it didn't take long for him to make his decision when approached by Fenway Sports Group over the possibility of a new deal.

“When the owners brought the possibility to renew to me, I asked myself the question I’ve mused over publicly," said Klopp. "Do I have the energy and vibe to give of myself again what this amazing place requires from the person in the manager’s office?

“I didn’t need too long to answer in truth. The answer was very simple... I’m in love with here and I feel fine!"

Klopp added: "There are so many words I could use to describe how I am feeling about this news... delighted, humbled, blessed, privileged and excited would be a start. There is just so much to love about this place. I knew that before I came here, I got to know it even better after I arrived and now I know it more than ever before.

“Like any healthy relationship, it always has to be a two-way street; you have to be right for each other. The feeling we were absolutely right for each other is what brought me here in the first place and it’s why I’ve extended previously.

“This one is different because of the length of time we have been together. I had to ask myself the question: Is it right for Liverpool that I stay longer? Along with my two assistant managers, Pep Lijnders and Pete Krawietz, we came to the conclusion it was a ‘Yes!’"

Klopp pointed to a number of factors behind his renewal, from the working relationships with Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan and Julian Ward - who will replace Michael Edwards as sporting director this summer - to infrastructure changes such as the AXA Training Centre and the ongoing new Anfield Road stand construction.

“There is a freshness about us as a club still and this energises me," said the Reds boss. "For as long as I have been here, our owners have been unbelievably committed and energetic about this club and it is clear that right now this applies to our future as much as I’ve ever known.

“In Billy Hogan and Julian Ward we have leaders throughout the club who are completely focused on renewal and refreshing so we can continue to compete at the very highest level."

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Klopp added: “We have managed to harness the best of what we have created already at the same time as injecting fresh impetus into our environment.

“The new AXA Training Centre is a superb home for us and the fact that Anfield will grow even bigger soon with the Anfield Road development, I can’t wait for that. We are a club that is constantly moving in the right direction. We have a clear idea of what we want; we have a clear idea of how we try to achieve it. That’s always a great position to start from."

Klopp also admitted the decision of Lijnders and Krawietz to also remain on board was hugely influential - although it was his wife Ulla who first raised the prospect of continuing his stay beyond 2024.

"If, when I said around the last contract extension, that in 2024 that's it then, it was actually a private agreement and the most important contract in my life I signed is the one with Ulla," said the Liverpool manager. "That's where it started again.

"We sat in the kitchen at the table and Ulla said, 'I can't see us leaving in 2024.' And I was like, 'What?!'. When that started then I thought, let's have a think and when I thought about it then it was clear I need to have one more really important conversation and that was the one to Pep Lijnders.

"He is probably the main reason for it because he is a real energiser – you know him, this man is on fire and our connection is beyond football things. When he said, 'Oh, yes, I am in!' then it was clear that we are open for any kind of talks. "

Klopp added: "To have Pep and Pete join me in signing new deals and therefore making sure we’d continue to work together was incredibly important to me in making my decision to sign my own contract.

“I’ve said there were a number of things that made my decision an easy one – and Pep and Pete signing was one of them. A massive one, in fact. It is important they remain here to continue the continuity of our project together. What they bring to Liverpool FC is invaluable."
