Bristol is now home to one of the smallest Lidl stores in the country. The store at the bottom of Union Street in Broadmead opened its doors last summer and despite not having a middle aisle has proven very popular with customers.
The store is one of 16 in the city, but this is its only city centre branch and is in perfect proximity to Bristol’s main shopping quarter, ideal for those wanting to grab some groceries on their way home after a day out shopping.
We decided to head down to the store on Union Street to see what it was like.

Upon walking up to the store, one of the first things you notice is how small the building actually is. While we knew it to be small, when you’re looking in from the outside you do wonder how they fit a whole supermarket within those four walls. I headed inside to see what the place was actually like.
Inside, the first impression you get is that while small, the aisles are nicely sized and not too crowded. Unfortunately in reality that's not the case and only the first and last two aisles were wide enough for people to move around. Walking around the shop, it felt pretty cramped and it felt almost impossible to move.
I think the biggest standout of the store is that it has no middle aisle. Both Lidl and Aldi are known for their middle aisles and the bargains or deals they offer shoppers. I think by not having that it made the room feel smaller but also the experience less fun - I love hunting around the middle aisles to see what I can find.

On my way out I headed down to where the tills were and boy was the queue long, not only for the serviced tills but the self-service as well. With only one of the manned tills open, many were heading to the self-service to get their stuff paid for quicker.
My overall experience of the store was a mixed one. I feel that while in an ideal part of the city, the plot was almost too small for the store placed inside. And with no middle aisle, I didn’t walk out with any great item I had miraculously found.
