We compared Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's and Morrisons to see which is cheapest for eight items we all use

The cost of living is rising dramatically and if there's one place we feel it, it's at the supermarket.

Food shopping is something we can't live without, but there are ways to make it cheaper.

We've been focusing on retailers' budget ranges and deals to help make your money go further. But with prices constantly changing and supermarkets battling it out for our custom, it's not always easy working out where you can make the biggest savings.

That's why we've been taking a look at the price of eight basics in the six main supermarkets this week - buying the cheapest of everything available.

On our shopping list was a loaf of bread, a two-pint bottle of milk, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince. While leaner mince is obviously healthier, it's more expensive too, so we opted for the cheapest 20% fat mince available from the fresh shelves.

The only slight difference in size was the baked beans, ranging from 400g in Sainsbury's and 410g in Asda and Morrisons, to the standard 420g in Aldi, Lidl and Tesco - which shows you to keep an eye on the size as well as the price.

And where the 300g packs of chicken differ at 330g and 350g, we've worked out the equivalent price for a fairer comparison.

You can tell from the empty shelves how many people are buying the cheapest products (Manchester Family / MEN)

Aldi came out as cheapest overall, at £9.13 for the lot. That was with 25% fat mince though, compared with 20% at all the others. And it pipped Lidl to the top spot by just one penny.

In third place was Asda, at £9.44, helped by its budget Smart Price range. Its coffee in particular, at £1.40 for two of its 100g jars, the cheapest of all the supermarkets.

Tesco's Aldi Price Match helped keep its bill down to £9.52, although some prices differed from the budget retailer's, with Tesco's coffee actually working out cheaper than Aldi, but its teabags, butter and meat more expensive.

Morrisons, which has its budget Savers range, came in at £9.69 overall. While many of its prices matched those of Aldi and Lidl, its chicken worked out dearer and its cheapest 800g loaf is 59p, compared with just 36p in the cheaper stores.

It does however sell a slightly smaller 720g loaf for just 32p and judging by the empty shelf where that one sits, it's being snapped up by customers looking to save wherever they can.

Most expensive was Sainsbury's at £10.93. While its budget ranges including Hubbard's and its own Aldi Price Match helped to keep prices down, its mince and butter - at £2 and £1.75 respectively - were the most expensive of the lot.
