We compared Aldi and Lindt Easter chocolate bunnies and it was a close call

Easter is just around the corner, with retailers stocking the shelves with chocolate eggs, sweets and the ever popular chocolate bunny.

Whether you're celebrating Easter for religious reasons or you just fancy indulging in all the festive treats on offer, you'll undoubtedly have been tempted by numerous variations of the chocolate bunny. The adorable confectionery is shaped like a rabbit and usually comes wrapped in luxurious gold packaging.

Master chocolatier Lindt's chocolate bunny has a stellar reputation, thanks to its creamy, decadent and thick shell. It's quite pricey, retailing for £4 in most supermarkets and stores, and comes in a variety of flavours including dark, white and hazelnut. Lindt devotees can even snap up a 1kg milk chocolate bunny - though it does cost £50.

We were keen to see how a cheaper alternative might measure up so opted for Aldi's Moser Roth Milk Chocolate Bunny, which costs £1.29. Aldi is famed for its dupes of high end products, stocking everything from budget-friendly versions of iconic beauty products to discounted food products created in the style of other high street stores.

We bought a Lindt bunny for £4 and Aldi's cheaper version and tucked in to see how they compared. Here's our verdict:

Aldi's Moser Roth Milk Chocolate Bunny

I absolutely love Lindt's chocolate bunny and have had many over the years, so I was intrigued to try Aldi's version. On first impression, Aldi's Moser Roth Milk Chocolate Bunny looked very appealing. It comes in cute packaging consisting of the familiar gold foil of the Lindt bunny, plus an adorable blue bow tie with a gold charm on.

After removing the foil, I couldn't help but say "awww", as the chocolate was engraved with a sweet bunny design. I was greeted with the familiar, delightful smell of chocolate and broke off the bunny's ears (sorry, bunny!).

The chocolate was smooth, creamy and delicious. If I was handed a piece of Aldi’s chocolate bunny and a piece of Lindt’s, I’d have a hard time guessing which one was which. However, I would say the Lindt bunny has a slightly creamier taste which the chocolatier is well known for.

Aldi's chocolate bunny was thin in some places, but nice and thick in other sections. Despite Aldi's Moser Roth Milk Chocolate Bunny not being identical to Lindt's, I think it's a great alternative if you’re not wanting to spend up to £4 but are craving that smooth chocolate taste.

Rating: 4/5

Price: £1.29.

Where to buy: Your local Aldi.

Lindt Milk Chocolate Gold Bunny

I'm a big fan of Lindt chocolate, tucking into far too many of the confectionery giant's legendary Lindor truffles at Christmas time, before eagerly awaiting its chocolate bunny's arrival in stores for Easter. It is expensive but, in my opinion, it's worth it.

The famed gold packaging is well made, offering a touch of elegance finished off with a cute red ribbon around the bunny's neck, with a little gold bell. The quality of the chocolate is evident from the very first bite; the shell is generously thick while the texture is sweet, smooth and silky perfection.

Aldi's version is a lovely alternative but it doesn't quite measure up to the decadence of Lindt. Easter only comes once a year so it's worth splashing out and having a taste of true luxury as an annual treat.

I might have to forgo a few of my favourite weekly snacks here and there in order to indulge in this delightful creation but it's not a frequent purchase, so it's not going to have too much of a negative impact on my poor bank balance. Life is hard enough, why not snap up simple pleasures at any given opportunity?

Rating: 5/5

Price: Usually £4 for 200g though it may be on offer in some supermarkets. It comes in smaller versions which are cheaper, too.

Where to buy: You can buy them from Tesco, online at Lindt or from most supermarkets.

The winner

It was a very close call but Lindt's chocolate bunny just came out on top. If you'd rather save some much-needed cash during these ever increasingly difficult financial times, then Aldi's version will more than satisfy any chocolate cravings.

If you're wanting to splash out a little more and treat yourself, then Lindt's chocolate bunny is a luxurious, decadent treat that's truly delicious. Easter is just once a year, so we're treating ourselves to a Lindt bunny. Sorry, Aldi.
