Dave Hughes allegedly peeing in glasses is not the kind of news I expected from the Aussie comedy scene this week, but here we are.
If you are confused (or slightly disgusted) by what I just said, let me take you to the beginning of this lore drop. Yesterday, comedian and TV host Melanie Bracewell posted a TikTok about an interaction she’d had with fellow comedian Dave “Hughesy” Hughes. In the video, she explains, “The other day I wrote this pretty harmless joke about Hughesy, um, that he’s living from his tenants’ paycheck to tenants’ paycheck. Just a bit of fun. He’s a battler, just trying to put eight roofs over his head, you know?”
She’d posted the gag on X, where she wrote, “you gotta feel for hughesy, he’s living from his tenants’ paycheck to tenants’ paycheck.”

It seems Hughesy couldn’t take the joke and in screenshots Mel shared, he wrote in the comments: “Mel, I’m not part of the thievery gang. I’m trying to stop them. So many honest people are afraid to speak up because of the real fear of violent reprisal. You are doing the less fortunate a disservice by attacking people who speak out against corruption.”
Bracewell responded: “@dhughesy it’s a joke Hughesy remember when you did those!”

In the TikTok, she continues her commentary saying, “And the whole thing about freedom of speech is that, like, we’re also free to make fun of you if we think that you’re full of… maybe the guy with like a hundred houses isn’t really looking out for the best interests of the battler.”

She then shows DMs where he continues the political rant, which he happened to have sent on Mel’s birthday. “It’s my birthday Hughesy I’m not reading all this.” she replied.
But the part that really sent people was a comment Bracewell left under that video. She wrote: “BTW the first time we met he peed in one of my glasses I use for stage bc he couldn’t go out to the bathroom, he does this regularly and wait staff have to clean it up.”

I for one am no stranger to telling someone to ‘GoPiss Girl’ every time the moment presents itself, but there is a line.
To back up her claims, Mel posted a second TikTok showing older DMs from April 26, 2022. In that screenshot, Hughesy messages: “Can we ring you on our radio show to talk backstage cups today? Just after 7am?” and adds, “Will plug Cheap Seats!” After she replies, “Oh yo! I just woke up hahaha”, he says, “We did the story! Question for you to answer is do you want the glass back?” and she responds: “No”.
PEDESTRIAN.TV has reached out to both Hughesy and Mel for comment.
Hughesy has recently been in the headlines for his very loud political takes, especially his furious sprays at the Albanese government over budget changes, negative gearing and capital gains tax.
In one live TV appearance, he called the Labor budget an “absolute disgrace” and slammed the government as “idiots” who treat public money like cash they “found in a sack by the river”. Those rants, plus his pledge to vote Liberal at the next election, have sparked backlash online and I have a feeling the whole ‘peeing in glasses’ thing won’t help. Just a hunch!
