Wayne Rooney responds as huge Arsenal decision confirmed

Arsenal will prepare for the 2023/24 season with a summer trip to the United States after the club confirmed plans for Mikel Arteta's side to take on an MLS All-Stars team.

The Gunners will visit the U.S for the second consecutive year after they took on Everton, Orlando City and Chelsea in three games in the space of a week.

Arteta's men will travel to Washington D.C. on July 19 to face a team featuring selected players from Major League Soccer. This year, Premier League icon Wayne Rooney will lead the All-Star team due to the fixture taking place in the city of D.C. United - who he is currently head coach of.

This year's edition of the fixture will be Rooney's third-time appearing in the annual game. In 2011, he was part of the Manchester United side that won 4-0 in New Jersey in-front of 26,760 supporters before being part of the MLS All-Stars team against Atletico Madrid in 2019.

Following confirmation of July's visit of Arsenal, Rooney told the MLS website: "I’ve had a front-row seat to watch the growth and development of Major League Soccer, first as a player and now as a manager.

"The opportunity to lead the best our league has to offer against a top Premier League club like Arsenal will be a highlight for me personally and an unforgettable experience for our passionate fanbase here in D.C."

MLS Deputy Commissioner and President, Gary Stevenson, has discussed the excitement the Gunners' visit to Washington will bring following their remarkable Premier League season. "Major League Soccer is pleased to welcome Arsenal FC as the opponent for the 2023 MLS All-Star Game and All-Star Skills Challenge," he said.

"Arsenal FC is one of the most storied and popular clubs in the world and they are giving their fans a memorable season as they sit at the top of the Premier League table.

"Fans at Audi Field and watching on MLS Season Pass will be treated to back-to-back fun and thrilling nights featuring skill, style, and intense competition as top global stars meet in our nation’s capital. As our league, clubs, partners, and fans converge in D.C. for a week of events, a matchup between Arsenal and the best of MLS is the perfect way to celebrate the sport and culture of soccer in North America."
