NEW DELHI: The former England international footballer, Wayne Rooney, has stepped down as the head coach of Major League Soccer's DC United following the team's failure to clinch a playoff spot. The decision to part ways was described as "mutually agreed" in a statement issued by the club.
Jason Levien, the CEO and co-chairman of DC United, explained the rationale behind this mutual decision: "We have spoken with Wayne and agreed it is best for us to part ways at this time. This decision creates the avenue for our next General Manager to have the full opportunity to impart a new philosophy and structure onto our sporting operations, which begins with the critical identification of a Head Coach who will best align with this."
Rooney, who had previously managed English club Derby County before his departure in June 2022 due to the club's financial crisis, joined DC United in July 2022. His return to the club came after a stint as a player in 2018 and 2019.
When Rooney took over as head coach, DC United was positioned near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Despite notable progress this season, where the team finished in ninth place, it fell short of securing a coveted playoff berth, leading to Rooney's departure.
In the aftermath of his final match as head coach, a 2-0 victory against New York City FC, Rooney articulated his perspective: "It's the right time. I've done everything I can to get this club into the playoffs. It's not a single thing that's happened. It's about timing."
Rooney, aged 37, disclosed that he currently has no specific career plans, though he hinted at a return to England: "What lies ahead, I don't know. I've seen a lot of reports in the media. I'm going back with nothing lined up."
Rooney expressed his gratitude to all parties involved with DC United, including the staff and players, for their unwavering support.
The decision to part ways with Rooney comes at a transitional period for DC United, as the club has been without a general manager since last October when Lucy Rushton was relieved of her duties. Roster decisions have since been handled by president of soccer operations Dave Kasper and technical director Stewart Mairs.
Throughout Rooney's tenure, his wife and family remained in England while he worked with the club. His next career move within the realm of football remains uncertain.
