Wayne Rooney is set to return to MLS side DC United and take over as manager.
According to the Associated Press, the 36-year-old will head back to the United States after leaving League One side Derby following their relegation.
The former striker played for the MLS club in 2018 and 2019. Once visa paperwork is complete, Rooney is set to replace interim coach Chad Ashton, who replaced Hernan Losada earlier this season.
DC United are level with Chicago for the fewest points in the 28-team league with a record of five wins in 17 matches. United lost 7-0 on Friday night at the Philadelphia Union, matching the MLS record for largest margin of defeat.
Rooney was spotted at Wimbledon during the week before flying out to the States to complete the move.
Amid Derby’s off-field strife, he was credited with rallying the club’s fanbase and playing staff last season, however they dropped out of the Championship having suffered a 21-point deduction.
