EVERY classic car auction claims to offer unusual, desirable, racy and fascinating machines.
But here is one that is truly unique and with a pedigree that will ensure plenty of interest from petrolheads.
This is the Audi Quattro S1 E2 Sport that started life as a family runaround and ended up racing at the famous Pikes Peak hill climb in Colorado.
It’s the work of Cumbrian rally driver and engineer Keith Edwards, 60, who admits himself: “It’s scary to drive! It’s one of those cars that just wants to kill you.
“You have to physically manhandle it but, when properly driven, the feedback is a fantastic sensation.”
The beast, with a 2.3-litre five-cylinder engine developing more than 800bhp, moves at such a rate that it generates 2G when accelerating.
Keith bought the Audi for £28,000 as a family road car but then decided to prepare it for hillclimbing.
He developed it over the years – with an estimated £200,000 spent on changing everything from the chassis, body components and the engine – even to the intricacies of nuts, bolts and brackets.
The customised Audi’s reputation grew during a decade of British Hillclimb Championship action followed by five years of invitation to European events.
And then came the ultimate accolade – an invitation from Pikes Peak organisers to take part in “The Race to the Clouds” in 2018 and 2019.
This Audi has gained worldwide recognition on the internet and in a variety of petrolhead magazines.
As a result, it is expected to fetch as much as £250,000 as it comes up for grabs with Silverstone Auctions at its sale at Sywell Aerodrome, Northamptonshire, on May 28.
