Shakhtar Donetsk's Danylo Sikan produced one of the worst misses you're ever likely to see during Tuesday night's Champions League clash.
The second-half sub somehow conspired to miss an open goal from close range after being perfectly set up by the outstanding Mykhaylo Mudryk in a moment that left Celtic Park stunned into silence. The Ukrainians had not long since levelled a pulsating group stage clash via Mudryk himself after Giorgos Giakoumakis had given Celtic a first-half lead. The game had become increasingly open as both sides pushed for a second goal to fulfil their respective ambitions.
Celtic were desperate to keep hopes of a path into the Europa League alive, while Shakhtar still harboured hopes of beating RB Leipzig into second spot before kick-off. And it appeared they had found the goal they so desperately craved when Mudryk left Cameron Carter-Vickers for dead on the left flank after a Celtic attack broke down.
The 21-year-old surged into the box and put the ball on a plate for the advancing Sikan but his baffling hesitancy produced a miss commentator Chris Sutton described one of the worst in football history. Sikan failed to put any conviction into what seemed the easiest of finishes, instead tapping the ball meekly wide of the target in a quite incredible moment, one that seems destined to become a viral clip for some time to come.
