Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has urged the Prime Minister to stop the “hokey-cokey” and back Labour’s plan to bring in a windfall tax on energy firms at PMQs.
Boris Johnson told MPs soaring energy costs were driven partly by Covid and the invasion of Ukraine. He said that ministers will look at all the measures that could help “get people through to the other side” of the cost of living crisis.
Tory MPs voted down a bid to impose a windfall tax on oil and gas giants on Tuesday.
In a swipe at the Government, Sir Keir said the only opponent of windfall tax was Jacob Rees-Mogg, when he was not sticking notes on people’s desks “like an overgrown prefect”.
It comes as inflation hit a 40-year high of nine per cent in April. This is up from March’s figure of seven per cent, driven by last month’s rise in the energy price cap.
