Cinema Diverse 2023 will be screening four thought-provoking films that explore various contemporary art issues in different contexts over two weekends from 2-5pm at the Auditorium, 5th floor of Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre, Pathumwan intersection.
Held in collaboration with Documentary Club, the 10th edition of the programme has selected three documentaries and a drama that showcases the deep connection between art and humanity from an art perspective.
Audiences are invited to watch the films and participate in discussions with speakers and experts who play key roles in the Thai art scene, including those from contemporary art, art museums, film and literature.
The first documentary film on the programme will be Herb & Dorothy on Saturday. Directed by Megumi Sasaki, it tells the story of two middle-class collectors of contemporary art and their enormous and valuable collection of conceptual and minimalist pieces. Speaking on the movie will be Jongsuwat Angsuvarnsiri, managing director of SAC Gallery.
Cameraperson, a 2016 autobiographical collage documentary film, will be screened on Sunday. It's an account by director Kirsten Johnson of her life and career as a cinematographer. Set to talk after the screening will be Teerawat Rujenatham, director of photography.
Scheduled for May 20 is The Great Museum by Johannes Holzhausen who gives a curious, witty and humorous peek behind the scenes at a world-famous cultural institution -- the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Yuddhanavarakorn Saengaram, curator of National Museum Bangkok, will speak after the screening.
The programme will conclude with Poetry, a 2010 South Korean-French drama, on May 21. Directed by Lee Chang-dong, it tells of a suburban woman in her 60s who, faced with the discovery of a heinous family crime and in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, finds strength and purpose when she enrols in a poetry class. Later there will be a discussion with writer Kittiphol Saragganonda.
The movies come with Thai and English subtitles and the talk session will be conducted in Thai. There is no admission fee.
