Watch Mikey Johnston bag first Ireland goal as Celtic winger hypes up 'delight' over Brendan Rodgers return

Mikey Johnston scored his first Republic of Ireland goal in just his fourth appearance for the country on Monday evening after scoring the opener in their 3-0 win against Gibraltar.

Celtic whizzkid Johnston was born in Glasgow, but chances have been few and far between under Steve Clarke’s guidance, where he failed to break into the first team despite some under-21 performances. However, despite injury woes, his successful loan spell at Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes last season brought the attentions of Ireland.

Johnston is eligible for the country through his grandfather, and boss Stephen Kenny announced in March 2023 that Johnston had applied for permission - with FIFA confirming as much just a few days later. And it’s been the dream start for the youngster - though he couldn’t have asked for an easier finish.

Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone took a free-kick, though it hit the wall and pinballed straight to Johnston. Just three yards out and with the goalkeeper still on the floor, it would have been a shocking miss - but they all count.

Brighton prodigy Evan Ferguson continued the scoring just seven minutes later before Adam Idah’s goal wrapped things up. It looks to be an exciting future for Ireland - and that could be furthered for Johnston after Brendan Rodgers’ return.

He said to Off The Ball after the game: “Delighted. Obviously he is a great manager, plays great football and I obviously learned a lot under him before.

“If I get the chance to work under him again, I’ll be delighted.”
