The 2024 Melbourne Cup result saw one of the biggest shocks in the history of the race as 90/1 shot KNIGHT’S CHOICE won the $8m contest that is dubbed ‘The Race That Stops A Nation’ for singing Irish jockey Robbie Dolan.
Singing Jockey Robbie Dolan Gets The Right Tune Out Of Knight’s Choice To Win 2024 Melbourne Cup at 90/1
The Willie Mullins-trained Vauban had been one of the 2024 Melbourne Cup fancies with the best horse betting sites in the UK but in what was his second try in the race, the Irish raider finished well down the field again under William Buick.
However, in 2015 the race produced a 100/1 winner in Prince Of Penzance and history was repeating itself as the 2024 Melbourne Cup result produced another shock winner when outsider KNIGHT’S CHOICE came with a weaving late run to get up on the line – winning at 90/1.
It was a first win in the race for horse racing trainer John Symons but the second for Sheila Laxon, with the pair having a joint licence, after she won the Melbourne Cup in 2001 with Ethereal.
While it was also a first win in Aussie showpiece race for Irish jockey Robbie Dolan – who is based in Australia and bizarrely was also a finalist on ‘The Voice Australia’ (watch below).
Singer turned jockey Dolan, who is based Down Under, certain got the right tune out of his mount Knight’s Choice – cutting through the pack down the Flemington straight and getting his 5 year-old’s head up on the line.
The Japanese raider Warp Speed was a close second, with the former Joseph O’Brien-trained Okita Soushi in third and Godolphin’s Zardozi in fourth under jockey Andrea Atzeni.
Of the European raiders, Absurde did the best in 5th, while Vauban and Onesmoothoperator trailed in 11th and 12th, with Sea King, for Hollie Doyle, back in 14th.
Buckaroo, the 2024 Melbourne Cup favourite, ended the race in 9th.
The shock Melbourne Cup result also landed a lucky punter A$3.2m after picking the first four horses home.
