King Charles's praise of "checks and balances" on executive power received a huge round of applause during his historic speech to the US Congress on Tuesday (28 April).
His Majesty received a standing ovation from lawmakers in the chambers as he emphasised that the U.S. is built on the idea of checks and balances based on the Magna Carta.
The Magna Carta, issued in 1215, was the first document to put into writing the principle that the king and his government was not above the law.
"The US Supreme Court Historical Society has calculated that Magna Carta is cited in at least 160 Supreme Court cases since 1789, not least as the foundation of the principle that executive power is subject to checks and balances," the King said.
