Watch: Grizzly bear emerges from hibernation at ski resort

A grizzly bear at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has emerged from hibernation for the 20th time and the resort captured the moment in video.

The bear is named Boo and it is a longtime resident of the Canadian ski resort that is located in Golden, British Columbia.

Unlike traditional ski resorts, this one features a grizzly bear refuge.

“This is the largest enclosed and protected grizzly bear habitat in the world,” the resort states. “The 20-acre area is the home of our resident grizzly bear, Boo. Within this natural mountainside habitat, Boo hunts, plays, forages, and explores just like his wild cousins.”

The resort posted the video of Boo emerging from its snowy hibernation on Facebook and Instagram, and asked a favor of its guests as the grizzly continued its transition from hibernation.

“We ask that all guests please stay quiet when going over the enclosure in the gondola and when skiing by the Bear Refuge on Lower Wiley Coyote,” the resort stated. “Boo is currently transitioning from his dormant state to a phase we affectionately call ‘walking hibernation’ – where his body is reversing the dormancy process. We are doing our best to keep things calm and quiet to give Boo what he needs to comfortably transition into his normal state.

“Boo will be ready to greet guests up close and personal this summer! Stay tuned for our summer operating hours and Boo’s 20th Year; we have some exciting plans for the big guy this year that we are excited to share with all of you!”

So, skiers and snowboarders, keep it down while in those affected areas.
