WATCH: Best mic’d up moments from Chiefs’ 2021 season

The Kansas City Chiefs had some great mic’d up moments during the course of the 2021 NFL season.

Those moments range from funny to downright impressive feats of skill. Let’s start out talking about the funny, though. For instance, it’s crazy how many different checks the Chiefs have at the line of scrimmage, both on offense and defense, that are named after foods.

“Banana, banana,” Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes called out at the line of scrimmage. “Banana.”

“Nacho, nacho,” Chiefs LB Willie Gay Jr. shouted to his teammates. “Nacho.”

“Curry, curry, curry,” Mahomes said as he approached the huddle. “Curry, curry, curry.”

You just know that Andy Reid’s mind came up with all of the food-related checks and play calls. Mahomes wasn’t the only one talking bananas either, as cameras caught RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire eating a banana on the sideline.

“Noshing on my banana, man,” Edwards-Helaire says on the sideline. “I be hungry as hell.”

One of my favorite moments came in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens. Tyrann Mathieu, who was fresh off the COVID-19 reserve list, had nearly picked off a pass from Ravens QB Lamar Jackson. He started goading the Baltimore offense as they walked back to the huddle.

“Hey, hey,” Mathieu shouted. “Y’all better run the ball, I’m telling you. Run the f-ing ball. I’m going to pick the next one. I’m telling you.”

Sure enough, on the next play, former Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins falls out of his break and Jackson throws the ball right into Mathieu’s chest for a pick-six. He called his shot and the universe answered with a gift.

Perhaps the most amazing moment captured was Travis Kelce’s game-winning score against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round. The excitement from all of his teammates swarming him after the play was something that you almost wish you could bottle.

It’s a little disheartening to watch that only to know what happened a week later in the AFC championship game. Still, it’s fun to look back on the season and it has us plenty antsy for the 2022 NFL season to arrive.
