Jhon Duran Supplies Finishing Touch For Villans
Fresh off the back of ending an eight-game winless run with a 3-1 triumph over Brentford last weekend, Aston Villa welcomed Premier League strugglers Southampton to the West Midlands on Saturday afternoon.
With a busy festive period ahead, Unai Emery made several changes to his lineup, most notably handing Jhon Duran a rare league start in lieu of England striker Ollie Watkins.
Emery was almost immediately rewarded for this selection, with Duran opening the scoring after 24 minutes. The Colombian did well to snatch the ball from Taylor Harwood-Bellis before dinking his effort over the onrushing Joe Lumley to take his goal tally for the campaign to nine across all competitions.
Plenty of further chances came the way of Morgan Rogers, John McGinn, Watkins and Ross Barkley, with Villa totalling 18 shots and an xG of 2.35, but Duran’s first-half strike was the only one that found the back of the net.
Three points take the Villans up to fifth place in the Premier League table after 15 matches, while Southampton remain bottom of the table, eight points adrift of safety, with the UK’s best football betting sites heavily favouring the south coast club to suffer immediate relegation back down to the second tier.

Villa are back in continental action on Tuesday night with a trip to Germany to face RB Leipzig on MD6 of the Champions League, before heading to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest in the league on the following Saturday.
The Saints, meanwhile, looking to bring an end to their dreadful winless run, host Ange Postecoglou and his inconsistent Tottenham side on Sunday, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Liverpool following that one.
