Despite his cameo role, Maeda did make an impact for his country as he scored a header with three minutes left.
Reims winger Junya Ito curled an inviting ball towards the back post where Maeda burst into space to power it home.
Maeda had shown a serious turn of pace to leave his marker trailing as he notched for Japan.

The goal for the Samurai Blue comes just days after Maeda opened the scoring for Celtic against Rangers.
Maeda had turned home after just 17 minutes at Parkhead in the 3-0 win on Sunday before jetting out to meet his Japan team-mates in Saitama.
Supporters also noticed Maeda's new haircut with the winger sporting a darker shade on international duty. He appears to have dyed his hair a silver shade after being blond at the weekend.
