Arshad Nadeem did for Pakistan what no other athlete from the country had done ever before in individual events at the Olympics -- winning a gold medal. But the 27-year-old Nadeem not just defied one of the strongest fields in the 12-man javelin throw final at recent editions of the Games, but went on to create an Olympic record to finish on the top of the podium in Paris on Thursday evening, ahead of India's Neeraj Chopra who settled for a silver medal in his campaign as the defending champion.
After his second attempt went as far as 92.97m, Nadeem, a silver medallist from the last World Athletics Championships in Budapest where Neeraj was crowned champion, went down on his knees covering his face with his palms in disbelief.
