Watch: Andy Burnham calls for political change after Makerfield by-election victory

Andy Burnham used his victory speech after winning the Makerfield by-election to call for political change and national unity after being declared the constituency’s new MP.

Thanking election staff, fellow candidates and voters, Burnham said the result could mark a turning point for Britain, arguing that many people feel politics is no longer working.

“Everyone knows that politics isn't working,” he said.

“Everyone can feel that the country isn't where it should be. Tonight, could be the turning point.”

Burnham pledged to put “place before party,” represent all constituents regardless of how they voted, and focus on solving problems rather than political point-scoring.
