Mark Gonzalez has insisted matches of every kind against Manchester United remain a special occasion after scoring in Liverpool Legends’ 2-1 win over the Red Devils on Saturday afternoon.
Raising money for the LFC Foundation, the 'Legends of the North' fixture returned for a second instalment having first taken place first between the sides back in May. Gonzalez was twice on target in this 3-1 win at Old Trafford and was back among the goals as United made the trip to Anfield this weekend.
The former Chile international found the bottom right corner of the goal only moments after being deployed as a substitute, having been picked out by team-mate Robbie Keane. Speaking of his delight at breaching the Red Devils’ backline after the full-time whistle, the former Liverpool winger said: ”It was literally my first touch. I remember Robbie [Keane] having that back pass and I started whistling and he knew I was coming back. I didn’t think twice and gave it the first touch with my right foot.

“Playing Man United is always an intense game, it doesn’t matter if it is a charity game. We always want to win and fortunately we won the second leg. We knew if we drew the game, it would go to penalty kicks and that wasn’t the idea. We can go home happy.”
After performing to a high standard in both meetings with United, the 38-year-old is now hopeful he will continue to be selected to participate in matches of this nature in the future.
Gonzalez said: “Of course I want to come back! Last game I scored the brace and now I had the opportunity to score again. I always want to be part of the team and I hope to be back again and scoring.”
