The Washington Mystics have announced the departure of coach Eric Thibault and general manager Mike Thibault, marking a significant change for the franchise. Eric Thibault, who succeeded his father after the 2022 season, becomes the fifth WNBA coach to be released this offseason, following similar moves by teams in Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Prior to his role as head coach, Eric Thibault served as an assistant coach for the Mystics for a decade, including four years as associate head coach.
The decision to part ways with the Thibaults comes after the Mystics concluded the season with a 14-26 record, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot. The team faced challenges early on, starting the year with 12 consecutive losses and grappling with injuries to key players such as Shakira Austin and Brittney Sykes. Additionally, the Mystics underwent significant roster changes during the offseason, with star players like Elena Delle Donne opting out and Natasha Cloud departing for Phoenix.
Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger expressed that the organization has reached a juncture where new leadership is needed to steer the team towards future success in the WNBA. Winger praised Coach Mike Thibault for elevating the Mystics program to a position of prominence within the league, highlighting his contributions to innovation, player care, and overall franchise development.
Mike Thibault, who joined the Mystics in 2012 as both GM and coach, led the team to its first WNBA title in 2019. Over his tenure, the Mystics made eight postseason appearances, and he was honored with the WNBA Coach of the Year award in 2013. With 379 wins, Thibault holds the record for the most victories by a coach in WNBA history.
Winger acknowledged Thibault's instrumental role in shaping the Mystics into a championship-winning team and commended his leadership, dedication, and impact on the franchise. He also lauded Eric Thibault's coaching abilities and motivational skills, emphasizing the positive influence he has had on the players during his two seasons with the team.
As the Mystics bid farewell to the Thibaults, the organization looks ahead to a new chapter under fresh leadership, aiming to build on past successes and continue to make an impact in the WNBA landscape for years to come.
