Washington Football Team reveals Commanders as new name

It’s official; the Washington Football Team is no more. On NBC’s Today Show Wednesday morning, team president Jason Wright, Washington legend Doug Williams and captain Jonathan Allen revealed Washington’s new name would be the Commanders.

Washington, which officially retired its old name in July 2020, was known by the temporary moniker of “Football Team” over the past two seasons.

Washington choosing Commanders as the new name is not a surprise. Over the past month, there have been clues, including Wright holding an unblurred photo in the team’s “Making the Brand” video, which featured the Commanders’ name and a logo.

Last week, a Twitter used did some online sleuthing and discovered the Commanders.com domain was transferred to MarkMonitor, which the NFL uses for most of its domains.

On Monday, franchise legend Joe Theismann was on CBS Radio in New York and discussed the Commanders as Washington’s new name. He later backtracked.

Finally, Tuesday night, an aerial reporter and photojournalist for NBC spotted a Commanders’ banner inside FedEx Field.

It’s a new era for the NFL’s Washington franchise.
