Warzone 2 Season 3: release date, DMZ overhaul, Intervention sniper and new modes

Warzone 2 Season 3 is mere days away and the next big content update will be bringing back highly requested modes, weapons, and features from the series' past.

Warzone 2's latest season is on the way, and it looks to bring with it an exciting new roster of modes, features, and weapons to freshen things up. Despite the weapon meta changes that came with the launch of Season 2 Reloaded, the game has been struggling to keep up with contemporaries like Fortnite, with several popular streamers abandoning the game. Season 3 is offering a host of exciting updates to hopefully get the game closer to the golden era of the original Warzone.

Here's everything we know about Call of Duty: Warzone 2 Season 3 so far, including the update's confirmed release date, new modes, roadmap and more.

Warzone 2 Season 3: release date

Activision has confirmed that Warzone 2 Season 3 will begin on Wednesday, April 12. Players will be able to jump into the new season from 6pm BST / 1pm EDT / 10am PDT, with the actual content update becoming available to download early from 6pm BST / 1pm EDT / 10am PDT on Monday, April 10.

Warzone 2 Season 3: roadmap and battle pass

Here's the Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 Season 3 Roadmap (Activision)

Activision has revealed the Warzone 2 Season 3 roadmap showing players what they can expect in Warzone 2 Season 3.

Included in the roadmap are the new operators, Alejandro and Valeria – two main characters who featured predominantly in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 single-player campaign, with more operators promised to come as Season 3 continues.

Also included is the brand new BlackCell Battle Pass bundle which features the Battle Pass with some extra goodies at a higher price point. Items included in this bundle are as follows:

  • Access to the full Season 03 Battle Pass and 20 Tier Skips (25 on PlayStation)
  • 1,100 COD Points instantly awarded
  • Up to 1,400 COD Points awarded throughout the Battle Pass
  • A BlackCell Operator, attired in an imposing animated Camo skin
  • A Pro-Tuned Weapon Blueprint, Vehicle Skin, and Finishing Move
  • An exclusive BlackCell Sector within the Battle Pass AO serves as an alternative starting location
  • Immediate unlocking of adjacent Battle Pass Sectors to the BlackCell Sector
  • Additional, BlackCell-only Battle Pass content: Every Season 03 Battle Pass Sector with an Operator Skin has a BlackCell variant (12 Skins in total) to unlock

You can still buy the standard Battle Pass (which is themed around Task Force 141 for this season) for 1,100 COD Points.

Warzone 2 Season 3: gameplay

New modes like Gunfight, Plunder, Massive Resurgence, and Warzone Ranked are confirmed to arrive during Season 3; of these four, only Gunfight and Massive Resurgence will be available at the launch of the new season, with Plunder promised as an 'In-Season' update, while more info on Warzone Ranked will arrive 'Mid-Season'.

Plunder is a fan-favourite game mode, often used as an easy way for players to unlock and level up new weapons. It involves players attempting to finish a match with the highest cash amount. Players haven't been able to experience this mode since the original Call of Duty: Warzone, so it's about time.

Finally there's Massive Resurgence. This mode takes the classic Resurgence game mode and moves it over to the far larger Al Mazrah map. To compensate for the larger map, there's also a bumped up player count, so expect even more chaos than your usual Resurgence game.

Warzone 2 Season 3: DMZ

Also featured in the Roadmap are some major changes to DMZ. Included is the brand new bartering option for Buy Stations, which will allow players to swap hoarded items for other goodies, while saving cash in the process. Bartering is only available between players and the Buy Station – however, you'll need to stick to the classic dropping items method to trade with your squad mates.

Also coming to DMZ with Warzone 2 Season 3 are the brand new Workbenches that allow players to modify their contraband weapons by adding or removing attachments. Not only that but there's the brand new REDACTED faction with its own faction missions and bosses to conquer.

Finally, you'll now have access to three Active Duty Operator Slots at a time – as opposed to the one we've had until now – this will make cut down on time messing about between matches as you'll have three pre-set loadouts to drop in with.

Warzone 2 Season 3: Intervention sniper

The Intervention is a legendary sniper that first featured in the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2009. It appeared in a number of single-player campaign missions and was also available in multiplayer too, gaining popularity due to its high damage and ability to one-shot players from long distances – as long as it's a headshot.

Players have been calling for Activision to buff snipers in Warzone 2 for a long time, and its decision to introduce a special one-shot sniper as part of the St. Patrick's Day event was likely a test run to get feedback from before pulling the trigger.

And it looks like that feedback was positive because Infinity Ward confirmed on Twitter that the FJX Imperium Sniper – a re-imagining of the Intervention – will be available as a new weapon in Warzone 2 Season 3.

The new sniper looks very similar to the classic Intervention in the design and the way its scope looks in-game, and will be available as part of the Season 3 Battle Pass! Judging by the footage, it looks like it might just be the sniper we've all been waiting for.
