Warning to shoppers after Trafford Centre thefts - including two Range Rovers

Shoppers have been given a warning by police amid a spate of vehicle thefts from Trafford car parks. Some 12 people have already been arrested, with a juvenile arrested on suspicion of theft of a vehicle this morning (January 27).

Range Rovers and Ford Fiestas are among the cars being targeted, police have said they have noticed an increase in vehicles being stolen, particularly from the Trafford Centre. Thieves are said to be using signal jamming and scanning devices to steal people's cars.

Greater Manchester Police have now issued a warning to car owners after launching 'Operation Lexford', designed to tackle the rising vehicle thefts, with officers working with the Trafford Centre security team. There will be an increased police presence at the shopping centre over the coming months in response.

Chief Inspector Shoheb Chowdhury of GMP’s Trafford District, said the operation has seen a significant decrease in the thefts since it began: “So far we have recovered 5 vehicles, 2 Ford Fiesta and 3 Range Rovers, and arrested 12 individuals.

“It has been 14 days since a vehicle has been reported as stolen from the Trafford Centre and we will continue this momentum by ensuring that we have officers out patrolling the car parks and giving out prevention advice at our crime prevention stalls inside the Trafford Centre.

“There are a number of ways to minimise the threat of a vehicle being taken when it is parked:

• Double check that your car is locked when leaving it, don’t just rely on the fob as signals can be blocked, preventing vehicles locking.
• Invest in a faraday bag – they are lined with metal material and could help block the key’s signal.
• Don’t leave any valuables on display in your car, even loose change can attract attention.
• Invest in a tracking device – it won’t stop the vehicle being stolen, but it can significantly increase the chances of police locating and returning a vehicle to the rightful owner.
• Fitting a steering wheel lock can reduce opportunities for theft. They are a visual deterrent and can slow an offender down.
